Susanna's story is a courtroom drama. Two elders spy on her bathing, demand she sleep with them, and accuse her of adultery when she refuses; she is condemned, and a young Daniel stops the execution by cross-examining the two men separately about which tree they saw it under. They give different trees. It may be the earliest detective story anyone wrote down.

Where it comes from

The story of Susann

The story of Susanna belongs to the Greek additions to Daniel and is in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles rather than Protestant ones, which is why it is better known in Europe than in America. The name spread through Christian Europe anyway and became a standard English one after the Reformation. German writes Susann and Susanne with a doubled n, following its own spelling rules, and American records carry Susann from 1910, peaking in the early 1940s. It is one of the few American spellings that follows a German convention rather than an English one.

Meaning

lily

From the Hebrew shoshannah, which names a flower — a lily in most translations, though a lotus or a rose have both been argued, since the word covers more than one plant. It is one of the few Hebrew women's names that is simply a flower, without a sentence attached.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Susann went to 6 girls in 2025, but Susan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 228, which makes it the 734th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,474 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 7,049 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Susann itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a single flower and needs no explanation.
  • Sue and Susie are both entirely established and require nothing of anybody.
  • It is a standard German and Swedish spelling rather than an American variation.
  • The story behind it is genuinely gripping and takes three sentences to tell.
What to consider
  • Susan and Suzanne are both far commoner in America and will be written instead.
  • It belongs to a mid-century generation and places a woman's age immediately.
  • The doubled n reads as an error to English speakers who do not know the German convention.
