Where it comes from

The story of Steward

The family held the office of steward of Scotland for generations until it stopped being a job and became a surname, and then one of them married the daughter of Robert the Bruce and their son inherited the throne. The dynasty ran Scotland for three centuries and England for a further one. The spelling changed on the way for a very specific reason: Mary, raised in France, adopted the form Stuart because French printers had no letter w and rendered it awkwardly, and the French spelling stuck to the royal line while the older one stayed with everybody else. So the two spellings of one surname mark a split between a family in France and a family at home.

Meaning

Keeper of the hall

Old English stigweard, from stig, a hall or a pen, and weard, a guardian; the earlier and narrower sense involved the animals. The word rose steadily in status while keeping its shape, which is unusual, since most words that start low stay low. By the twelfth century a High Steward of Scotland was one of the great officers of state.

STOO-urd

Two syllables with the stress at the front. British speakers often keep a y-glide and say STYOO-urd; Americans generally do not, which is the same difference that separates their pronunciations of duke and news.

Steward sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 37 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Steward sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete, documented and can be given to a child in a few words.
  • Ward and Stu are two short forms with nothing in common.
  • It works for a child of either sex, as surnames used as first names generally do.
What to consider
  • Stewart and Stuart are both far commoner as given names and will be written instead.
  • The word is still an ordinary English noun, and the name will be read as one.
  • It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
