The story of Stanly
The name's most visible modern life is on a trophy. Lord Stanley of Preston, serving as Governor General of Canada, watched a game of ice hockey at a winter carnival in Montreal, was thoroughly taken with it, and in 1892 paid about ten guineas for a silver bowl to be given to the best amateur team in the country. He never saw a game played for it; he was recalled to England before the first challenge. The bowl became the Stanley Cup and is now the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, with the names of the winners engraved on it year after year until the bands fill up and are retired. Meanwhile the e-less spelling had already made its own mark in America: Stanly County in North Carolina, named for a congressman's family, has been spelled that way since it was formed in the eighteen-forties.
