The story of Stanislaus
Stanisław Leszczyński was elected king of Poland, lost the throne, was restored, lost it again, and ended up with a consolation prize: the duchy of Lorraine, handed to him in a treaty because his daughter had married the king of France. He spent thirty years there building squares, fountains and gates in Nancy that are now a world heritage site, founding a library and an academy, and writing about political reform. He is also, by persistent tradition, credited with inventing or popularizing the rum baba, having found a local cake too dry and poured sweet wine over it. The glory element in his name, sława, is the same one in Wenceslaus, Bronisław and Jarosław, and it means exactly what it looks like.

Fashion outlook
Stanislaus sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Stan is available as a short form from the first day and needs no explaining anywhere.
- The meaning is settled and documented in a living language with a long written record.
- It is thoroughly established in Poland and central Europe, so it is rare here without being invented.
- Four syllables and an unusual ending mean it will be spelled aloud often in America.
- Stanislav, Stanislas and Stanisław are all current, so the spelling will be queried by anyone who knows the name.
- It reads as a name of an older generation in America, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
