Where it comes from

The story of Sofiya

Hagia Sophia in Constantinople was dedicated not to a saint but to Holy Wisdom, and the word traveled across the Orthodox world with that dedication. Slavic languages took it as Sofiya, with the stress on the middle syllable, and it became one of the most-used women's names from Russia to Bulgaria. It arrived in American records in every spelling its speakers used — Sophia, Sofia, Sofya, Sofiya — and this one marks a family from the Slavic-speaking world.

Meaning

From Greek sophia, wisdom; the same word gives philosophy its second half.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sofiya went to 51 girls in 2025, but Sophia and Sofia are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 20,895, which makes it the 1st most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,129 places above the chart.

and 4 rarer spellings.

About 1 girl in 77 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 31,515 for Sofiya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning and more than a millennium of unbroken use across Europe.
  • Sophia is universally recognized, so the name is never unfamiliar in English.
  • Sonya and Sofi give it short forms in two different languages.
What to consider
  • Sophia and Sofia are far more written in America, and the y will be corrected out constantly.
  • The sound is extremely common in her year group even where this spelling is not.
  • Slavic and English stress patterns differ slightly, and both will be used.
