The story of Simmie
One Simeon spent thirty-seven years on top of a pillar. He had tried ordinary asceticism, found that crowds kept interrupting, and built a platform on a column near Aleppo which he raised over the years until it was fifteen meters high, living on it in all weathers with a rail to stop him falling while he slept. People came from Britain and Persia to consult him; he preached twice a day to the crowd below, arbitrated disputes, wrote letters to emperors, and refused to come down. Imitators followed for centuries and the practice got its own name. The ruins of the church built around the pillar were still standing until recently, with the base of the column in the middle of them.
Meaning
He has heard
Hebrew Shimon is built on the verb to hear, and the text explains it as God having heard that a mother was unloved. The Greek Simon is unrelated and describes a nose. Because the two were used interchangeably in the ancient world, a modern Simon or Simmie has no way of knowing which one is behind him.

Fashion outlook
Simmie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and easy for a child to say and write.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Two long formal names sit behind it if one is ever wanted.
- The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
- It is a pet form on a certificate and leaves nothing more formal underneath.
- It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
