Where it comes from

The story of Sigifredo

Old High German wrote the word for victory as sigi; later German lengthened the vowel and spelled it Sieg, so Sigifrid became Siegfried. The Spanish form follows the medieval Latin Sigifridus and keeps the older vowel. In the Nibelungenlied, written down around 1200, Siegfried bathes in the blood of the dragon he has killed, but a linden leaf covers one place on his back. His wife Kriemhild, trying to protect him, sews a cross on his clothing to mark the spot, and Hagen uses it to kill him.

Meaning

Fashion outlook

Sigifredo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear, settled meaning: victory and peace.
  • Ties to one of the great heroes of medieval German poetry.
  • Recognizably Spanish while keeping its Germanic root on show.
What to consider
  • English speakers will say the g as in go, and the name will need spelling and saying.
  • Siegfried's story ends in betrayal and murder; the association is literary and very old.
