Where it comes from

The story of Shedrick

The renaming in the first chapter of Daniel is deliberate and the book expects the reader to notice: Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, all of whom have God inside their names, are given names built on Babylonian gods instead. Then they refuse to bow to a statue and survive the furnace, and it is their Babylonian names that go into every subsequent retelling and every spiritual. Shedrick is the American spelling, and it does to a Babylonian name what American spelling does to everything: writes it with a k on the end so that it looks like a surname.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Babylonian name has no agreed meaning; proposals connect it to the moon god Aku, and none is secure. The Hebrew name it replaced was Hananiah, which means God has been gracious.

Shedrick sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 79 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Shedrick sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both syllables are readable, so the name is said correctly at sight.
  • Rick is a ready short form and a standing name of its own.
  • The story behind it is among the best known in the Hebrew Bible.
What to consider
  • Shadrach is the biblical spelling and will be offered instead.
  • The name is not the man's own; it was given to him by the people who deported him.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century in American records.
