Shay
Feminine · “gift" in Hebrew”
Shay is given to both — 8,227 girls and 5,024 boys since 1880. See Shay as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Shay comes down at least two separate roads that happen to meet at one syllable: the Irish surname Ó Séaghdha, worn smooth into Shea and Shay, and the Hebrew word shai, a gift, used as a given name for girls and boys alike in Israel. In English it is also an old word for a light carriage. Whichever road you came by, it lands the same way in the mouth — one open sound, rhyming with day.

The story of Shay
The Irish thread is the older one on paper: Séaghdha, an early personal name that survives mainly inside the surname Ó Séaghdha, anglicized in the nineteenth century as Shea and O'Shea, with Shay as the spelling that follows English pronunciation most closely. In Ireland it also serves as the everyday spoken form of Séamus. The Hebrew thread runs parallel and independent — shai, gift, given to girls and boys in Israel and usually written Shai in transliteration. In the United States the name arrived in the middle of the twentieth century and has been carried by girls and boys both, sometimes on its own and sometimes as the short form of something longer.

"gift" in Hebrew; "hawk-like" or "stately" in the Irish line
Two unrelated sources genuinely compete. As a spelling of Hebrew שי (shai), it is the ordinary word for a gift. As an anglicization of the Irish name Séaghdha, behind the surname Ó Séaghdha (Shea, O'Shea), it is usually read as "hawk-like" or "stately, admirable" — Irish scholars have argued for both. Neither reading cancels the other; a Shay in the US may descend from either, or from neither, having simply arrived as a short form of Shayla, Shayna or Shannon.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Drema test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shay's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Drema climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Drema's path sketches the road Shay is walking now.
Shay sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable, four letters, and pronounceable on sight by almost any English speaker.
- Works as a full name or as the short form of Shayla, Shayna, Shannon or Séamus, which leaves room for a longer formal name if you want one.
- Belongs equally to Irish and Hebrew naming traditions, so it travels without needing translation.
- Familiar in sound without being crowded — a Shay is unlikely to share the name with a classmate.
- Shea, Shae, Shai and Shaye all sound identical, so expect to spell it out often and to be handed the wrong version on forms and coffee cups.
- It goes to boys as well as girls, and the Irish line in particular is largely male. A girl named Shay will occasionally be assumed male on paper, and the reverse happens too.
- With one syllable and an open vowel, it can blur into a surname that also begins with a vowel; saying the full name aloud a few times will tell you quickly.
- Its strongest showing was a while ago and it has been easing back since, which means it reads as neither brand-new nor of-the-moment — a quiet middle ground some parents want and some don't.
