Shamon is recorded for sons and for daughters, with rather more daughters, and nothing settles whether it respells an Irish river name or was built from a free front and a free ending. The English word it most resembles is Siberian, and it arrived by a route almost nobody guesses.

Where it comes from

Our story of Shamon

Shaman is not a general anthropological term that happens to fit Siberia. It is a Siberian word. The Evenki šamán named a specific religious specialist among the Tungusic peoples, and Russian explorers and exiles in Siberia picked it up in the seventeenth century; German and English scholars took it from Russian, and anthropology then generalized it to cover ritual practitioners on every continent. Whether that generalization is useful has been argued over for a century, since it groups together people whose work has very little in common beyond a trance. A minority view traces the Evenki word back further, to a Buddhist term for a monk borrowed through Chinese; most specialists treat it as native Tungusic and the question is open.

It may respell the Irish river name used as a personal name, or join the Sha- front to the -mon ending in the way American naming does. The record holds the spelling and nothing else.

Pronouncing Shamon

shuh-MON

Two syllables with the stress at the back. Families reading it from the river name say SHAN-un instead, which is a different word entirely.

Shamon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shamon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
What to consider
  • Shannon, Shamone and Shammon will all be written for it.
  • The two readings stress it differently, so it is said two ways.
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
