Where it comes from

The story of Shamir

The word appears in the prophets as the hardest thing there is, a point of diamond that will not yield, and also as the thorn that takes over an abandoned field. It names a town in Joshua and a man in Chronicles. Later rabbinic literature turned the word into a creature, the shamir, a small worm or stone able to cut through anything, which Solomon was said to have used to shape the Temple stones without iron tools. The name came into modern use when Hebrew was revived as a spoken language and biblical word-names were taken up again.

Meaning

flint, or diamond; a hard cutting point

Hebrew shamir, used in the Bible for a hard stone or point, flint or diamond depending on the passage, and separately for a thorn or brier. Both senses are ancient and both are documented.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A real Hebrew word with a documented range of meanings rather than a constructed name.
  • The sound is simple for English speakers and needs no adjustment.
  • It sits beside Amir, Samir and Zamir, so it is familiar without being common.
What to consider
  • Samir and Shamir are one letter apart and are constantly swapped.
  • The clipped form Sham is an ordinary English word with an unhelpful meaning.
  • It carries a clear Hebrew identity, which is a statement in some settings.
