The story of Shamel
The war lasted a generation and cost Russia more men than the Crimean campaign. Shamil's method was to make the mountains do the fighting: ambushes in gorges, fortified villages that had to be taken one at a time, and a legal and religious order that gave the highlanders something to be loyal to beyond their own clans. When he finally surrendered he was treated as a distinguished prisoner rather than a criminal, met the Tsar, and was allowed to go on pilgrimage; he died in Medina. Both sides have claimed him since, which is the usual fate of a man who fought that long.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The American name is built from a productive front element and a short base, and neither carries a meaning. The Caucasian name is a form of the Hebrew Samuel, arriving through Arabic, and it is unrelated to any American assembly that lands on the same letters. Both are in the record and nothing distinguishes them there.
