Senia
Feminine · “hospitality”
Xenia is one of the great Greek ideas. It names the obligation owed to a stranger — food and a bed first, questions afterward — enforced by Zeus himself in his role as protector of guests, and the Odyssey is largely a long examination of who observes it and who does not. Senia is that name with the k that Slavic languages write dropped away.

The story of Senia
Greek religion made hospitality a matter of divine enforcement — a stranger at the door might be a god, and turning one away was a serious offense. Xenia the name spread through the Orthodox world, where Ksenia is entirely standard in Russia, Ukraine and Serbia, carried by a much-loved eighteenth-century holy woman of Saint Petersburg. English speakers meeting the Slavic spelling generally drop the k, which produces this name. American records carry Senia from 1894 in small numbers.
Meaningscholars disagree
hospitality; the guest-friendship owed to a stranger
If the name is a form of Xenia, the Greek xenos means both a stranger and a guest, and xenia is the sacred obligation between them. Slavic languages write it Ksenia, and English speakers have simplified that to Senia and Zenia. There is a second possibility: Senia is also a Finnish and Spanish short form of other names, and some American families arrived that way.

The trade-off
- The Greek concept behind it is one of the more admirable ideas any name can carry.
- Five letters, two syllables, and easy in any accent.
- It is standard across the Orthodox world in its fuller form.
- It sits well after long or consonant-heavy surnames.
- Xenia and Ksenia are both the standard forms elsewhere, and relatives may use them.
- The k that the Slavic spelling carries is gone here, which removes the visible link.
- Sonia, Senna and Xenia all sit close by and will be written instead.
