Where it comes from

The story of Sena

The nineteenth-century American Sena is the easiest line to trace: long women's names were routinely clipped, and Serena, Rosina, Josina and Christina all yielded a short -sena or -sina that became a name in its own right on the census. The Turkish and Ewe lines are entirely separate and both are living names in their own countries today. What arrives in modern American records is therefore several different names sharing four letters, and the family always knows which one it means.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no single source. Turkish Sena is from an Arabic word for praise. Ewe Sena, in Ghana and Togo, is generally read as a gift from God. In nineteenth-century America it appears mainly as a short form of Serena, Rosina and similar names, and Japanese Sena is written with characters chosen family by family.

Pronouncing Sena

SEE-nah

Two syllables. American usage generally gives a long first vowel; Turkish and Ewe usage both give SEH-nah.

Sena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2019, with 56 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sena went to 51 girls in 2025, but Senna and Seena are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 173, which makes it the 787th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,343 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 31,515 for Sena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, two syllables, and pronounceable in almost every language on earth.
  • It is a living name in Turkey, in Ghana and in Japan, so it belongs to several communities at once.
  • It has genuine nineteenth-century American history as well as modern international use.
What to consider
  • The first vowel is said differently by each of the traditions that use it.
  • Sena, Siena and Seneca are close enough to be confused in writing and aloud.
  • There is no single meaning, so the honest answer names several.
