The story of Seferino
The four winds each had a name, a direction and a temperament. Boreas came from the north and was violent; Notos came from the south and brought late-summer storms; Euros from the east was unlucky; and Zephyros from the west brought the spring, and in the poets he is the one who breathes on the flowers and makes them open. The Romans took the set over and Latin poetry is full of him. The name reached Christian use through a bishop of Rome in the third century, a man remembered mostly for the arguments that happened during his tenure, and after that it stayed alive in one language only. Spanish and Portuguese kept it as an ordinary given name; English, French and German dropped it entirely.
Meaning
Of the west wind
Greek Zephyros was the west wind personified, and the Latin name Zephyrinus is formed from it. Spanish reshaped the opening, since Spanish does not begin words with a z followed by that vowel comfortably, and produced Ceferino and Seferino. The meaning is unchanged through all of it: the name belongs to a wind.

Four syllables with the stress on the third. English speakers reading it cold usually produce something close enough; the only trap is the first vowel, which is short and clear in Spanish rather than reduced.

Fashion outlook
Seferino sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is concrete and poetic at once, and can be given to a child in four words.
- It is spelled as it sounds in Spanish, with nothing silent anywhere.
- It is genuinely uncommon while being entirely traditional in its own language.
- Ceferino with a c is the more standard Spanish spelling and will be written instead.
- The name has vanished from every language except Spanish and Portuguese, so it needs explaining elsewhere.
- Four syllables is long for daily use and a short form will be chosen early.
