Our story of Schyler
The Schuylers were a wealthy Dutch-descended family in Albany, and their daughters married into the revolutionary generation. The best documented of them, Eliza, outlived her husband by fifty years. In that time she raised eight children in reduced circumstances, co-founded the first private orphanage in New York City and ran it for decades, collected and organized her husband's papers, and pursued anybody she thought had misrepresented him, which was most people. Almost everything historians know about that man survives because she kept it. She died at ninety-seven, still working, having spent more of her life as a widow than as a wife.

Fashion outlook
Schyler sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Sky comes off the front as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- It carries a documented American history that a child can go and read about.
- Schuyler and Skyler are both commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
- The sch opening misleads readers who expect the German value, which is the usual correction.
- No origin is documented for this spelling, so the meaning question belongs to the surname.
