Where it comes from

The story of Sandor

Hungary's Sandor is a poet. Sándor Petőfi wrote in the language of the street rather than of the academies, and on a March morning in Pest he stood on the steps of a museum and read out a poem demanding freedom of the press and an end to serfdom. The revolution that followed lasted a year. He joined the army that fought it, rode to a battle in Transylvania against the Russians who had come to help the Austrians, and was never seen again — no body, no grave, and a century and a half of rumors that he had been taken to Siberia. He was twenty-six, and he is the national poet of a country that has never stopped looking for him.

Meaning

Defender of men

The Greek original joins a verb about defending to the word for men, and the reading has never been disputed. Hungarian borrowed the whole name and then wore it down from both ends, which is why the meaning is intact and the shape is unrecognizable.

Sandor sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1970, with 29 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Sandor sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine form of one of the great international names, with the meaning fully intact.
  • It sounds nothing like Alexander while being the same name, which is a rare kind of distinctiveness.
  • Alex and Sandy are both available as short forms without any awkwardness.
What to consider
  • Americans will say SAN-dor, and correcting that will be a lifelong small task.
  • The accent on the Hungarian spelling disappears on American forms.
  • It will be heard as a surname by people who know the Hungarian one.
