Where it comes from

The story of Sameul

Hannah, in the story, asks for a son, is given one, and names him with an explanation: because I asked him of the Lord. The trouble is that the verb she uses is the one that gives the name Saul, not this one — and Saul is the king this child will later anoint and then break with. Several explanations have been offered: that the birth story originally belonged to Saul and was transferred, that the writer is making a deliberate point, that ancient naming explanations were never meant as etymologies in the first place. The last is probably right and is the most interesting: biblical name explanations are almost always wordplay, and reading them as dictionary entries is a modern mistake.

God has heard

The usual reading joins a word about hearing to the name of God. But the story that introduces the name explains it as asked of God, which does not fit these letters — it fits another name altogether. Scholars have argued about the mismatch for a very long time.

Fashion outlook

Sameul sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is ancient, universal and carried everywhere.
  • Sam works from a playground to a signature without adjustment.
  • The story attached to it is genuinely interesting.
What to consider
  • Samuel is the standard spelling and his will be corrected to it on every document.
  • The exchanged letters look like a slip, and people will assume one.
  • All the history belongs to the standard spelling.
