The story of Salvadore
The Greek that needed translating was soter, a title used of gods and of kings long before it was used of Christ, and Latin had nothing to match it. The word salvator was made for the job, took hold, and spread into every Romance language: Salvador in Spanish and Portuguese, Salvatore in Italian, Sauveur in French. Spanish attached it to places as well as people, so a country and a great many towns carry it. The name reached the United States twice, once with Italian immigration and once with Spanish and Mexican, and this spelling is what happens when a family with one language in the ear and the other on the paperwork writes the name down.
Meaning
Saviour
Directly from the Latin salvator, one who saves. What is worth knowing is that the Latin word did not exist before it was needed. Classical Latin had no noun for a savior in the religious sense, so early Christian writers built one out of the verb salvare to translate a Greek title, and were criticized for inventing words. The name is that invented word, given to a child, and it names the office rather than describing the person carrying it.

Pronouncing Salvadore
sal-vah-DOR-eh
Four syllables if the final e is sounded, as it is in Italian, and three if it is not, as in Spanish Salvador. American speakers usually say sal-vuh-DOR, treating the e as silent, which makes the spelling do nothing at all.

Fashion outlook
Salvadore sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Instantly recognizable in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan, with a meaning that needs no explaining.
- Sal is a short, plain, entirely American everyday form that carries none of the weight of the full name.
- It is a formal, adult-sounding name that a child can grow into rather than out of.
- The final e belongs to Italian and the rest of the name to Spanish, so speakers of either language will read it as a mistake.
- The meaning is a religious title of some seriousness, and not every family will want that stated on a birth certificate.
- Four syllables is long for daily use, and Sal will be chosen for the child by somebody else.
