The story of Rylie
Riley reached American first names from two surnames that happened to be spelled alike in English. The English one names a rye field with a clearing in it; the Irish one belongs to a Cavan family who anglicized O Raghallaigh under English rule. Both crossed the Atlantic in numbers during the nineteenth century, and the surname moved to the front of the name in the ordinary American way. The Rylie spelling is a much later step, from the decades when parents were softening every -y ending they could find.

rye clearing in English; descendant of Raghallach in Irish
Two roads, both real. English Ryley is a place name from Old English ryge, rye, and leah, a woodland clearing. Irish O Raghallaigh, anglicized Reilly and Riley, is a family name from the personal name Raghallach, whose own meaning is not settled. Which one a family has depends on which country the surname came from, and often nobody knows.

The Christon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rylie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Christon climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Christon's path sketches the road Rylie is walking now.
Rylie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Every sound in it is ordinary English, so nobody stumbles over it.
- Ry is a ready short form that works from nursery to office.
- It carries two genuine surname histories, one Irish and one English.
- Riley is the standard spelling by a wide margin, so this one will be corrected constantly.
- Rylee, Ryleigh and Rylie all exist and are said identically, which makes written confusion certain.
- The name is given to both sexes and leans to girls, so a boy called Rylie will occasionally be filed on the wrong list.
