The story of Ryder
The word behind it is Old English rīdere, 'one who rides', and in medieval England it attached itself to men whose work was done on horseback — messengers, mounted retainers, soldiers. By the later Middle Ages it had hardened into a family name, spelled Rider or Ryder depending on the clerk, and it traveled to America with English settlers as a surname long before anyone thought of it as a first name. That last step came much later, part of the broad American habit of moving surnames to the front — a wave that also lifted names built from trades and actions. Its use as a given name is a recent chapter on a very old word.
