Our story of Ruther
In Manchester, around the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, Ernest Rutherford's assistants fired alpha particles at a sheet of gold foil thinner than paper and found that a few bounced almost straight back — 'as if you fired a fifteen-inch shell at a piece of tissue paper and it came back and hit you', he said — and from that he worked out that an atom has a tiny, heavy nucleus. Ruther shares only the first letters of his name; it is more likely Ruth, gently lengthened. But it carries the echo of a great discovery.
