The story of Rupert
Hrodberht gave French Robert and German Ruprecht, and the two diverged completely in sound. Prince Rupert of the Rhine came to England in 1642 to command his uncle Charles I's cavalry, and the name arrived with him — it had scarcely been used in England before. He later founded the Hudson's Bay Company, which is why a large part of Canada was called Rupert's Land. It reached American records in the nineteenth century.
