Rubbie
Feminine · “ruby”
Rubbie doubles a letter in a gem name and adds the ending the period attached to everything, and the doubling changes nothing. The stone itself is not a separate kind of thing from its more famous cousin, which is the part most people do not know.

The story of Rubbie
A ruby and a sapphire are the same mineral. Both are corundum — crystalline aluminum oxide, the second hardest natural substance after diamond — and the difference is a trace of chromium, which makes it red, against traces of iron and titanium, which make it blue. That is the whole distinction. By convention, red corundum is a ruby and corundum of every other color is a sapphire, which is why there are yellow sapphires, green sapphires and colorless ones, and why the trade has spent a century arguing about where pink stops and red begins. The argument is not academic: the same stone is worth several times more if it is called a ruby. Industrial corundum, chemically identical and worth almost nothing, is what emery paper is made of.
Meaning
ruby
The English word for the red gem, from the Latin for red. The doubled b is an English spelling habit after a short stressed vowel and appears in no earlier form of the word; the ie ending is the familiar one the nineteenth century attached freely to names.
How the name formed

Pronouncing Rubbie
ROO-bee
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled b would normally shorten the vowel before it in English, and here it does not, which is what makes the spelling unusual.

Fashion outlook
Rubbie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

- Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
- The standard spelling is available as a short form.
- Ruby is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
- The doubled letter suggests a short vowel that the name does not have.
- It reads as belonging firmly to one generation.
