The story of Rosio
The pilgrimage to El Rocio happens at Pentecost and brings something like a million people to a village in the marshes near Huelva, on foot, on horseback and in painted wagons, over several days. The image is carried through the streets at dawn. Spanish and Mexican families name daughters for it, as they do for Guadalupe, Pilar and Carmen, and the name arrived in America with them. The s spelling is what happens when the name is written by someone who has heard it and not seen it, since Spanish c before an i is said as an s across Latin America.
