Roshan is the Persian word for bright, and it is in names from Turkey to Bengal. This name was built in America out of American materials and lands on it by accident, which is worth saying in both directions: the Persian word is real, and it is not where this name came from.

How old is the name Roshanda?

Roshanda first appears in US birth records in 1964 — 61 years ago. The typical Roshanda alive today was born around 1980, making them about 45 years old. About 1,100 people named Roshanda are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Roshanda most popular?

Where it comes from

Our story of Roshanda

The Persian word traveled about as far as a word can. Roshan means bright or luminous, and it is in personal names across Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, Turkey, Pakistan and India; it is in place names, in the vocabulary of Persian poetry where light is doing a great deal of work, and it turns up as an element in dozens of compounds. Persian was the administrative and literary language of a huge area for centuries, in the way Latin was in Europe, and its vocabulary went everywhere the courts and the poets did. An American family in the nineteen-sixties putting two pleasant syllables together was not drawing on any of that, and the fact that they arrived at a real word anyway is a demonstration of how few easy syllable shapes there are.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No traceable source. The front is an opening syllable in wide American circulation and the ending belongs to a family of names built the same way. The resemblance to the Persian word is exact enough to be noticed and there is no record connecting them, so it should be described as a coincidence rather than as a derivation.

Pronouncing Roshanda

roh-SHAN-duh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The first and last vowels are reduced in ordinary speech, which is why the record also holds Rashanda and Reshanda with no audible difference.

Fashion outlook

Roshanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is the settled American one and the name sounds established rather than experimental.
  • Shanda and Ro are two short forms with nothing in common.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English and it is never mispronounced twice.
What to consider
  • Several spellings of the same sound circulate, so spelling it out is permanent.
  • The Persian resemblance will be reported as an origin by people who find it.
  • It is closely dated to one American generation.
