Rosena
Feminine · “rose”
Rosena has an s in the middle that is said as a z, and English spelling gives no warning of it. Rose, rise, and nose all do the same thing; so do dozens of ordinary words. The letter has two jobs and no rule about which one it is doing, and a reader meeting an unfamiliar name has to work it out from the company it keeps.

The story of Rosena
The most famous rose in English history was invented for a specific purpose. Henry VII, having won a throne by battle and married the heiress of the losing side, needed an emblem that said the quarrel was over, and produced one by superimposing a white rose on a red. It was excellent propaganda and slightly better than the facts: the white rose was a genuine Yorkist badge, but the red rose of Lancaster was barely used before the Tudors needed it to exist as a counterpart. The combined flower went onto everything, from coins to ceilings, and it is still the floral emblem of England, which is a long run for a piece of dynastic public relations.

rose
The flower is the reading almost everybody assumes and it may not be the original one: the medieval name behind Rose is generally traced to a Germanic element, and the flower was read into it afterwards. Once the re-reading happened it stuck, and names built on Rose from the nineteenth century onwards, this one included, were given for the flower whatever the older history says.
How the name formed
- A Germanic name later re-read as the flower
- Rose in wide medieval and Victorian use
- A Latin-looking ending added in America
- Rosena on certificates from the earliest records
