Roselyn
Feminine
Roselyn is one of a family of names that grew out of the medieval Rosalind, and it wears its history in plain sight: the flower name Rose at the front, and the soft -lyn ending that English speakers already know from Evelyn and Carolyn. It has been on American records for well over a century without ever crowding a classroom, and it is still given every year.

The story of Roselyn
The line begins with the Germanic Roslindis, carried into France and England by the Normans and settled there as Rosalind. Shakespeare gave the name two of its most-read outings, as Rosalind in As You Like It and Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost, which kept it in circulation among English readers for centuries. By the nineteenth century English speakers were writing it Rosalyn and Roselyn, endings that matched the fashionable -lyn names of the day. Roselyn arrived on American records in the late Victorian era and has stayed there ever since, strongest in the West and South.
Meaningscholars disagree
Either 'gentle horse' from Germanic roots, or 'beautiful rose' by later Romance reading
The older ancestor, Germanic Roslindis, joins hros 'horse' with lind 'soft, gentle, tender'. Once the name reached Spain and Italy, speakers reheard it as rosa linda, 'lovely rose', and that reading stuck. The Roselyn spelling leans openly on the second: the English word rose sits right in it, followed by the -lyn ending shared with Carolyn and Marilyn.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Roselyn went to 259 girls in 2025, but Roselynn, Roselin and Rozelyn are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 424, which makes it the 570th most-given girls’ name of the year — 409 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,791 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 6,206 for Roselyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Lilyan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Roselyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lilyan climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lilyan's path sketches the road Roselyn is walking now.

The trade-off
- Both halves are already familiar to English speakers — Rose at the front, the -lyn ending shared with Evelyn and Carolyn — so it is usually understood on first hearing.
- A documented line running back to medieval Germanic Roslindis, with a long unbroken presence on American records.
- Several ready-made short forms, from Rosie and Rose to Roz, none of which need inventing.
- Close relatives exist in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German, so the name travels without becoming unrecognizable.
- The spelling competes with Rosalyn, Rosalynn, Roselynn and Rosalind. People will often write one of the others on first try, so expect to spell it aloud fairly regularly.
- The three-syllable and two-syllable pronunciations are both genuine, which means a lifetime of small corrections unless you are relaxed about either.
- It is uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate — welcome to some families, less so to a child who would rather blend in.
- The Rose element is very visible, so the name reads as a flower name to many people even though its oldest root has nothing to do with flowers.
