Where it comes from

The story of Rosann

Two quite separate things produce this name. Italy has Rosanna, a genuine compound in a language that makes them freely, and it came to America with Italian families in the nineteenth century. England and America built Rose Ann independently, as a double name honoring two relatives, and wrote it open, closed and hyphenated by turns. The result is a name that is Italian in some households and homemade in others, with nothing on the certificate to tell them apart. The dropped final e in this spelling is English: it removes the French look that Rosanne carries and leaves the two English names visible.

Meaningscholars disagree

rose and grace

A compound name means the two people it honors rather than the sum of two words. The first half is a flower, the second the Hebrew sense of favor, and joined together they mean a grandmother and an aunt.

Fashion outlook

Rosann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are complete names, so the whole is read correctly at sight.
  • It carries three short forms, each a standing name.
  • It works as one word on forms, which the open version does not.
What to consider
  • Rosanne, Roseann, Rosanna and Rosann are all in the record and will be confused constantly.
  • The missing e will be added back by anyone writing from habit.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the first half of the twentieth century.
