Rosalene
Feminine · “horse and shield”
Rosalind is a horse, not a rose. The Germanic elements behind it are hros, a horse, and lind, soft or a shield of linden wood — and the rose arrived centuries later, when Latin speakers reinterpreted the first half as rosa and the second as linda, beautiful. The reinterpretation stuck so thoroughly that almost nobody knows the horse is there.

The story of Rosalene
Rosalind came into English from Spanish and Italian romance and was fixed by Shakespeare, who gave it to the heroine of a comedy set in a forest — one of the great parts in English drama. Rosaline is the same name with a different ending, and Shakespeare used that too. American naming then added its own endings, and Rosalene is one of the results: the -ene ending was productive here in the first half of the twentieth century, attaching to Ros-, Mar- and Char- fronts alike. It appears in the record from 1916.

horse and shield, or beautiful rose
The original Germanic compound joins hros, a horse, to lind, which means soft or supple and also named the linden wood a shield was made from. Latin speakers later read the same letters as rosa linda, beautiful rose, and that reading has been standard for six hundred years. Both are now true in the sense that both are meant.

The Gilberta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rosalene's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gilberta climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gilberta's path sketches the road Rosalene is walking now.
Rosalene sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
