Where it comes from

Our story of Ronnette

The Ronettes were three young women from Spanish Harlem, two sisters and a cousin, who had a run of records in the early sixties built on an enormous wall of overdubbed sound and one of the most recognizable voices of the period. The opening drumbeat of their biggest record is quoted constantly and is still instantly identifiable after a few seconds. The group's story afterward is not a happy one, involving a producer who married the lead singer and kept her in the house, and a long fight over royalties that she eventually won. The records have outlasted all of it and are on every list of the best of their decade.

No source has been documented. The front may be Ron or Rhonda and the ending is a borrowed diminutive used freely, and the group's name is a plausible influence rather than a proved one.

Fashion outlook

Ronnette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ronnie and Nettie are both available as short forms and both are established.
  • The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
What to consider
  • Ronette and Rhonette are both in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for most listeners.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
