The story of Ronette
The Ronettes came out of Spanish Harlem — two sisters and a cousin, singing together since childhood — and by the middle of the sixties they had made records that are still being copied, with a wall of sound behind them that producers spent the next forty years trying to rebuild. They toured Britain with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones supported them. The group's story afterwards is a hard one: their producer married the lead singer and largely ended her career, and the three of them had to sue years later for royalties they had never been paid. The name of the group was a coinage in the same style as the name on this page, and the two rose in the same decade — which is a fact about the record and not a claim about any parent's reasons.

Not established
The front element may be Ron, itself the short form of Ronald, which is a Norse compound about counsel and rule. It may equally be the back half of Veronica, clipped and reused. The ending is the French diminutive, borrowed into American naming as a decorative shape rather than a working suffix. With the front unresolved and the ending empty, the name cannot be translated, though either parent name would supply a meaning if a family wanted to claim one.

Fashion outlook
Ronette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A definite final stress that makes the name easy to hear and hard to mumble
- Contains a familiar, unisex short form that has been in use for a century
- Rare enough to be individual while sounding entirely unremarkable
- The single and double n spellings both circulate, so the name will be written both ways.
- The association with the group arrives immediately for anyone over a certain age.
- No meaning attaches to the whole name, only to whichever parent name a family claims.
