Where it comes from

Our story of Robinette

The English robin is a small round bird of hedgerows, tame enough to follow a gardener, and it has been affectionately named in English for centuries. When settlers reached North America they found a much larger thrush with a red front and called it a robin too, because it was the nearest thing to home. The two are not closely related. The same thing happened repeatedly: the American blackbird, the American badger and the American elk are all different animals wearing borrowed names, applied by people who were homesick and in a hurry. Naturalists have been trying to untangle it ever since, and the common names have not budged.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Robin began as a French pet form of Robert and became a name in its own right. Whether this spelling is a genuine French diminutive, an American build, or a surname moved forward is not recorded.

Fashion outlook

Robinette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Robin and Nettie are both available as short forms and both are established names.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everybody.
  • It carries a French shape without containing any sound English lacks.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • It reads as a name of an older American generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled behind it.
