Where it comes from

The story of Robbyn

A round robin is now a tournament where everybody plays everybody, but it started as a petition. Sailors with a grievance had a problem: whoever signed at the top of a complaint was the ringleader and would be hanged as one. The solution was to write the names in a circle, so that no signature came first. The phrase appears to come from a French term for a round ribbon, and the practice is documented on British ships in the eighteenth century. The name Robin has nothing to do with it; the words simply collided in English, as they usually do.

Meaning

bright fame, through Robert

Robert is a Germanic compound of the words for fame and brightness, brought to England by the Normans, and Robin was its ordinary English pet form for six hundred years before it became a name in its own right. The spelling with a y is a twentieth-century American convention for marking a name as a woman's, and the doubled b is doing what doubled consonants usually do in English, which here is nothing, since the vowel before it was short already.

How the name formed

  1. a Germanic compound of fame and brightness
  2. Robert arrives with the Normans and produces Robin
  3. Robin becomes a name in its own right
  4. American spellings mark the women's version with a y
  5. Robbyn appears among them in the 1940s

Fashion outlook

Robbyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explaining to anybody.
  • It works for a child of either sex, though this spelling leans strongly one way.
  • Rob and Bobbie are both available and belong to different registers.
What to consider
  • Robin and Robyn are both commoner and will be written instead.
  • Two letters have been changed and neither change survives being spoken.
  • The name is closely dated to the middle of the last century.
