The story of Rise
The one genuinely famous Rise sang at the Metropolitan Opera. Rise Stevens was a New York mezzo-soprano who joined the company at the end of the 1930s and stayed for more than twenty years, singing the great trouser roles and the great seductresses, and she was well enough known outside opera to appear opposite Bing Crosby in Going My Way, which won best picture. In an era when almost nobody could name a living opera singer, Americans could name her. Then she stopped singing, ran the company's touring arm, and lived to be a hundred.

There are two different names here that happen to be spelled the same. The modern one is the English word, given the way Legend, Justice, Sage and River are given. The older one, which accounts for nearly every Rise in American records before this decade, is a different name altogether with two dots over the e, said in three sounds rather than one. American forms do not carry the dots, so the two collapsed into one spelling and the record cannot separate them. If you give this name today, the word is what people will hear.
