Ripley began as English ground before it was ever a person: a scatter of villages in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Surrey and Hampshire, each name built from words for a strip of land and a clearing in the woods. From the villages it became a surname, and from the surname a first name, carried in the same way English place-names have traveled for centuries. It is two clean syllables that land on the same brisk consonant as Riley and Ripton, and no one has to ask how to spell it twice.

The story of Ripley
The name starts as topography. Several English villages called Ripley are recorded from the medieval period onward, and families who left them took the place with them as a surname — the standard route for English surnames drawn from land. Those surnames crossed the Atlantic and settled into American use, where Ripley also turned up as a town name in more than one state. Its life as a first name is much shorter and much more recent, part of the broad American habit of promoting surnames to given names for girls and boys alike, and it arrived on the charts in the wake of Ellen Ripley of the Alien films, one of the best-known characters in modern American cinema to be called by surname alone.

from an English place name: a clearing by a strip of land
The second element is settled — Old English leah, a woodland clearing or meadow, the same ending found in Ashley and Bradley. The first is read most often as ripel, a strip or narrow piece of land, though some place-name scholars read it instead as a term tied to a river bank or boundary. Either way, the name describes ground rather than a quality.

The Amani test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ripley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Amani climbed just as high around 2008, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Amani's path sketches the road Ripley is walking now.
Ripley is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

Where Ripley is headed
Ripley looks set to keep climbing gently, with roughly 54% more babies a year by 2030 if the current curve holds. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds and sounds the way it is spelled — a rare thing among newer given names.
- A genuinely long documented record as an English place name and surname, so it is new as a first name but not new as a word.
- Works for a boy or a girl without adjustment, which is true of most surname-derived names.
- Has a ready short form, Rip, that already stands on its own in American usage.
- Common enough as a surname that people recognize it immediately, uncommon enough as a first name that a child will likely be the only one in class.
- The film association is strong. For a lot of adults, Ripley means Ellen Ripley of the Alien films first — a compliment to many, but it is the frame the name arrives in, and it will come up.
- There is a second literary Ripley: Tom Ripley, the charming murderer of Patricia Highsmith's novels and their screen adaptations. Worth knowing about before you are told.
- The short form Rip also means to tear, and R.I.P. is close enough that some children will find it. Easy enough to steer toward the full name if that matters to you.
- It leans toward girls in American records without settling there, so a boy named Ripley may be assumed female on paper, and a girl may occasionally be assumed male. Neither reading is wrong yet, which cuts both ways.
