Rhona
Feminine
Rhona is Scottish, recent, and far less settled in its origins than a name this solid-looking has any right to be. Three explanations circulate and none of them has won: a feminine formed from Ronald, a borrowing of an island name off the north-west coast, or a reshaping of Rhoda. The h belongs to none of the three and is the one part of the name we can be certain about, because it was borrowed for its looks.

The story of Rhona
Scotland kept a habit the rest of the English-speaking world never picked up: making women's names out of men's, systematically and without apology. Davina from David, Edwina from Edward, Thomasina from Thomas, Williamina from William, Alexandrina from Alexander. These were not curiosities but ordinary names on ordinary certificates, several of them common enough to grow short forms of their own. Rhona fits that pattern neatly if it is a feminine of Ronald, and it appears at about the right moment for it. The h is the giveaway that something else was happening at the same time. Rhoda has an h because Greek handed it one, and a name built to look like Rhoda inherits the letter without inheriting the reason for it.

Not established
Three candidate sources, no decision between them, and no meaning that survives whichever choice is made. If the name is a feminine of Ronald, the sense runs back to a Norse compound about rule and counsel. If it is the island, the island's own name is disputed between a Gaelic word for a seal and a Norse one for rough ground. If it is Rhoda, the sense is a rose. Any of the three may be right, which is exactly why none of them can be printed as the meaning of this name.
How the name formed
- Rona in Scottish use
- Rhona once the h was borrowed for the look of it
- Carried south into England and beyond
- Rhonda arriving later as a separate name entirely

Pronouncing Rhona
ROH-nuh
Two syllables, long o, and the h is entirely silent. It changes the look of the name and nothing else. Rhonda is a separate name taken from a Welsh valley and is not a longer form of this one, however similar the two look on paper.

Fashion outlook
Rhona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, no ambiguity at all in speech, and it has never been common enough anywhere to feel used up.
- It reads as Scottish on sight without requiring anybody to attempt a Gaelic spelling.
- It ages well: it does not sound like a small child and it never sounded like a fashion.
- There is no settled meaning to give, and a parent who wants one will find three candidates and have to pick.
- The h will be dropped by a good half of the people who write the name down.
