Where it comes from

Our story of Rheta

Rheta Childe Dorr left a marriage in Seattle, moved to New York with a small son and no money, and made herself into a reporter at a time when the women's page was the only place a woman was employed to write. She refused to stay on it. She investigated factory conditions, ran the first magazine department in the country covering organized women's work, went to England and was arrested alongside the suffragettes, and in nineteen seventeen went to Russia, where she interviewed the head of the women's battalion and watched the second revolution of that year from the streets. She then covered the western front. Her autobiography is called A Woman of Fifty, and it is one of the sharpest accounts of what the trade cost.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name has no established source. Clipping the end of Margareta is the likeliest account, and the added h is a decorative device rather than evidence of Greek. Books that connect it to the Greek word for a public speaker are working from the h, which was put there for exactly that impression and is not a derivation.

Pronouncing Rheta

REE-tuh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The h is silent, as it is in every English word beginning rh, and the name is said exactly as Rita is.

Rheta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1934, with 151 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Rheta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, clear and easy to say, with a distinctive written form.
  • Reta is available as a plainer spelling of the same name.
  • It has a documented American bearer whose work a child can find.
What to consider
  • The h is inaudible and will be dropped by nearly everyone writing from dictation.
  • Rita and Reta are both commoner and will be substituted.
  • There is no meaning to give a child, and the Greek look invites a wrong one.
