The h in Rheba is borrowed from Greek and the name is not Greek. Rh at the front of an English word is a reliable signal of a Greek borrowing, in rhythm and rhetoric and rhinoceros; here it has been attached to a shortening of a Hebrew name, purely because it makes the written form look older than it is.

Where it comes from

The story of Rheba

The woman behind the full name is asked, in Genesis, whether she agrees to the marriage being arranged for her, and she answers in two words: I will go. It is a small moment and an unusual one, because the surrounding text does not generally trouble to record consent, and the negotiation up to that point has been entirely between men and about property. She then does most of the deciding for the rest of her life, arranging which of her sons receives the blessing and sending one of them abroad to keep the other from killing him. Whether that is admirable depends on the reader; that she is the one acting is not in question, and the passage is quoted in marriage law arguments to this day.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The parent name is Rebecca, whose Hebrew original has no settled meaning: proposals include a tie or a noose, a snare, and something to do with a well-fed animal, and none of them is convincing. A shortening of an unexplained name is still unexplained, and the added h contributes nothing.

REE-buh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The h is completely silent, as it is in every English word beginning rh; it was never pronounced in English and marks a Greek breathing that Greek itself stopped saying.

Rheba sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 52 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Rheba sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and easy to say, with nothing in it a small child will struggle with.
  • Reba is the same name in a plainer dress and is available immediately.
  • A long formal name sits behind it if one is ever wanted.
What to consider
  • The h will be dropped by nearly everybody writing from dictation.
  • It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
  • The full name behind it has no agreed meaning, so there is no short answer to give.
