The rh at the front of this name is not the rh in rhythm. English gets that pair from Greek, where it marked a breathy r; Welsh has its own rh, which is a genuinely different consonant — an r said without voice, closer to a hiss — and the name comes from the Welsh side.

Where it comes from

The story of Rheanna

The woman the name belongs to is punished in one of the strangest sentences in medieval literature. Accused of killing her own newborn son, she is made to sit at the gate of the court for seven years, tell her story to every visitor, and offer to carry them on her back to the hall. Most refuse. The child turns up alive, having been stolen the same night a foal was stolen, and the horse imagery runs through the whole story — she first appears riding a horse nobody can catch, however fast they gallop. She is almost certainly an older goddess with the divinity filed off.

Meaning

great queen

The Welsh name descends from a reconstructed Celtic title meaning great queen, applied to a figure who is plainly a goddess in the older layers of the story. The derivation is well established.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Welsh gives the rh a voiceless value that English does not attempt and does not need.

Rheanna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 89 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Rheanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rhea and Anna both sit inside it as complete independent names.
  • The meaning is grand, specific and genuinely ancient.
  • The rhythm is even and the name carries well.
What to consider
  • Rhiannon, Rihanna and Rheanne are all in use and the spelling gets queried.
  • The Welsh consonant is not reproduced in English and the spelling implies it.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its rise.
