Where it comes from

Our story of Reno

Ours, offered as ours. The Reno in Emilia-Romagna and the Rhine may share a name: both are probably from a pre-Roman root meaning simply a river or a flow, which is how a great many European rivers are named — the Avon, the Ouse and the Esk all mean water in one language or another. People name the river nearest them the river, and the name sticks when a different language arrives. The Nevada city is three removes from that.

Not established

The Italian river Reno has a pre-Roman name of unsettled origin, probably the same root as the Rhine. Separately Reno clips Italian names such as Moreno and Sereno. The Nevada city is named for Jesse Reno, whose surname is that Italian one.

Reno sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 117 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
  • Ren is a complete short form in current use.
  • Genuine nineteenth-century American use behind it.
What to consider
  • The Nevada city is the first association for most Americans.
  • The Italian and American pronunciations differ at the first vowel.
  • The meaning is genuinely unsettled.
