Where it comes from

The story of Renne

Renée of France, a daughter of King Louis XII, married into the ruling family of Ferrara in Italy, and at her court she sheltered John Calvin and other Protestant exiles when that was dangerous to do. The spelling Renne also sits one letter away from Rennes, the capital of Brittany, which is named after the Redones, the Gaulish people who held that country before the Romans came. American families wrote Renée as Renee, Rene and Renne, dropping the accent French uses to show the sound.

Meaning

reborn, as a spelling of Renée

Renée is the French feminine of René, from Latin renatus, reborn, a name given for baptism. In French, renne without a capital is also the word for a reindeer, a coincidence of spelling rather than a source.

Renne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Renne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds exactly like a well-known name with a clear meaning.
  • It is short and simple to write.
  • It has real French history behind it.
What to consider
  • Without the accent and the second e, most people will not know how to say it at first.
  • A very few boys have been given this spelling; for them it will read as a girl's name almost everywhere.
