Where it comes from

Our story of Renia

In older English the reins are the kidneys. The word came from Latin renes — the same root as renal — and it appears throughout the King James Bible, where God tries the heart and the reins, and where the psalmist says his reins instruct him in the night. The kidneys were understood as a seat of feeling and of conscience, in the way the heart was a seat of courage and the bowels of compassion, and none of that was metaphorical to the people writing it: they located emotion in specific organs. The sense survives nowhere in modern English, so a reader meeting the phrase assumes it is about horses. The anatomical word came back separately, as renal, and nobody connects the two.

Irene is Greek and means peace; Regina is Latin and means queen; Renata is Latin and means reborn. All three produce this short form and they have nothing in common. Registered alone, it points back to none of them.

Renia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 20 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Renia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both cuts produce short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
  • It is genuinely rare while being built from familiar sounds.
What to consider
  • Rena, Renae and Renata will all be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Which longer name it belongs to is not recorded, and the three are unrelated.
