Where it comes from

Our story of Renda

Walter Scott invented Brenda for a novel set in Shetland, taking it from the Norse-sounding material he was surrounded by there, and it went into general use within a generation and has never been out of it. That is a pattern rather than an exception: a novelist needs a name that sounds as though it belongs to a place, invents one, and the invention outlives the book by two centuries. The ending then detaches and becomes available, which is how a family of names grows around a single made word. Linda arrived by a different route and its origin is genuinely disputed, with Germanic, Spanish and Italian accounts all in circulation. Renda sits inside that family with no story of its own, which is not a failing; most of its neighbors have borrowed theirs.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source and no meaning. The name is likeliest a build on the ending shared with Brenda and Glenda, or a shortening of a longer name in that family. Italian and Portuguese have a word spelled the same way, meaning income or yield, and there is no reason to think it is connected.

Renda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1955, with 60 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Renda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell, with nothing silent or ambiguous in it.
  • Ren is a current, unisex, entirely modern short form.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while sounding like a name that has always existed.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Brenda and Rhonda, both of which are far commoner.
  • There is no meaning to give a child who asks.
  • It is strongly dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
