Renada
Feminine · “reborn”
Renada writes with a d a name that Latin, Italian and French all write with a t. The change is small and completely audible, which makes it unusual: most American respellings alter the page and leave the mouth alone. The word family behind it has produced one of English's better mangled borrowings.

The story of Renada
The Latin verb behind this name has a prefix meaning again and a stem about birth, and the same prefix produced a word for going the other way. A renegade, in the Spanish form that English borrowed in the sixteenth century, was specifically someone who had renounced Christianity — usually a European who had converted to Islam, often after capture, sometimes by choice, and a very large number of them existed around the Mediterranean. The word carried that precise religious sense for a long time before it softened into meaning a deserter and then merely a maverick. English also mangled it: unable to make sense of the ending, speakers reshaped it into runagate, as though it were about running, and that folk version survives in older Bibles and in Shakespeare. Two words, one root, and one of them was rebuilt out of English parts because nobody recognized the Spanish.
Meaning
reborn
From the Latin past participle renatus, reborn, used as a baptismal name from late antiquity onward. The same word gives French Renée and the English word renaissance. This spelling's d in place of a t may be Spanish influence, where the sound between vowels softens in that direction, but nothing records it.

Fashion outlook
Renada sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented, short and easy to state.
- Rena and Nada both detach and neither sounds like the other.
- Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English offers.
- Renata is the standard form in four languages and will be written for it.
- Spanish speakers will hear the back half as an ordinary word meaning nothing.
- The changed letter is audible, so the name and its standard form are not quite interchangeable in speech.
