Remona
Feminine · “counsel”
Remona writes the first vowel as an e in a syllable nobody stresses, which makes the letter a free choice. The name it respells was put into American circulation by a single novel in the eighteen eighties, written as a protest about the treatment of Native Californians, read as a romance instead, and responsible for a tourist industry the author would have found appalling.

The story of Remona
Helen Hunt Jackson had written a furious book of documentation about the treatment of Native Americans, nobody read it, and she wrote a novel instead in the hope that a story would do what evidence had not. It sold enormously. Readers took the romance and left the argument: within a decade there were Ramona pageants, Ramona tours, a claimed Ramona's birthplace and a wedding chapel, and southern California acquired a picturesque mission-era self-image built on a book about dispossession. The author died the year after publication, believing she had failed. The name entered the American register on the back of it and has been ordinary ever since, which is not the outcome she was working for either.
Meaning
counsel, protection
The parent name is the Spanish feminine of a Germanic compound joining an element about counsel with one meaning protection, and the reading is settled. The respelled vowel here changes nothing: the syllable is unstressed, English reduces it almost to nothing, and any letter can stand there without an audible difference.
How the name formed
- A Germanic compound of counsel and protection
- Ramon and Ramona in Spanish use
- A protest novel of the eighteen eighties making the name popular
- Remona, with the first vowel respelled

Fashion outlook
Remona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
