Reginia is Regina with an extra i, and Regina is not really a name at all: it is an ordinary Latin word that English adopted whole. Very few of those made the crossing. Most of the Latin in English naming arrived as somebody's actual name first, and this one arrived as a job title.

Where it comes from

The story of Reginia

The word had two lives before it was a name. It was a title in the litanies of the Church, and it was a legal fiction. In the courts of England and the Commonwealth, criminal prosecutions are brought by the Crown in person, so a case is written Regina against the defendant when a queen is on the throne and Rex when a king is, and the R in a citation is that word and not an abbreviation of anything else. Every criminal trial in those countries is formally an argument with a queen. The name reached ordinary American families much later and much more plainly, and Reginia is the American respelling of it, an inserted letter that turns three syllables into four.

Meaning

Queen

Regina is the Latin word for a queen, unchanged in form and unchanged in meaning. It stands beside Rex, Victor, Felix, Rosa and Stella in a very short list of plain Latin nouns that English took directly as given names, without a saint or a hero in between. Everything else in the Latin layer of English naming, the Julias and the Claudias and the Antonias, came through a family name first.

Pronouncing Reginia

ruh-JEE-nee-uh

The extra i does real work here: Regina is three syllables and Reginia is four. American speakers say the g soft, as a j, which is an English habit rather than a Latin one; classical Latin had a hard g and said it reh-GHEE-na.

Fashion outlook

Reginia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear, dignified meaning that can be given to a child in one word, with no argument about it anywhere.
  • Gina and Reggie are two very different everyday forms, one soft and one brisk.
  • It is recognizable in Italian, Spanish, Polish and German with almost no change.
What to consider
  • The English soft g gives the name a rhyme that children discover early, and it is worth knowing that before choosing it.
  • Regina is the standard spelling by a wide margin, so this version needs saying and spelling separately.
  • Four syllables is a long name for a small child, and it will be shortened by other people if it is not shortened first.
