Regina is one of very few Latin titles English uses as a plain name. It means queen, it appears after the monarch's name on every British coin, and it is also one of the oldest titles given to the Virgin — and English-speaking families give it to children without any of that being remarked on.

How old is the name Regena?

Where it comes from

The story of Regena

Most Latin words that became names came through a saint or a family: Clara, Felix, Victor, Beatrix. This one came through a phrase. Regina Caeli, queen of heaven, is one of the four Marian antiphons and has been sung in Latin for a thousand years, and Salve Regina is another; Catholic families across Europe took the word from those. Separately, English constitutional practice put it on coins and court documents after the sovereign's name, so that a British Regina is also a legal abstraction. The e spelling in Regena is an American variation on a vowel that is unstressed and therefore free.

Meaning

queen

The Latin regina is the feminine of rex. It is a common noun and a title rather than a personal name, which is what makes its use as one unusual.

Fashion outlook

Regena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standing name across Italy, Germany and Poland.
  • The meaning is one word, entirely settled, and easy to explain.
  • It carries several short forms with quite different characters.
What to consider
  • Regina is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • The g is hard in every language but English, so the name is said two very different ways.
  • It means queen, which is a large thing to hand a child.
