Origin, sound and short forms
Our story of Rechelle
In 1688 Huguenots who had fled France after Louis XIV revoked their right to worship bought land on Long Island Sound and named their settlement New Rochelle, after La Rochelle, the Protestant port many of them came from. Rechelle carries an echo of that name and of Rachelle, the French-looking Rachel of the same years, without settling on either. It is a soft name with a hint of the coast in it.
