Where it comes from

Our story of Reather

The word it most resembles has a history worth borrowing. Rather began as a comparative — the comparative of rathe, an old English word meaning early — so that to do a thing rather than another was once to do it sooner, and the modern sense of preference grew out of that. Rathe itself survives in almost nothing; a poet writing about early flowers could still use it four hundred years ago, and after that it slipped out of the language, leaving only its comparative behind, doing a completely different job and looking like a simple word rather than the fossil it is. A name that has lost its parent, standing next to a word that has lost its parent, is at least in good company.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No parent name can be established. Margaretha worn down to its tail is the likeliest guess and is only a guess; Reatha and Retha appear in the same records and may be the same name or three different ones. Nothing in the documents settles it, and nothing is likely to.

Reather sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1921, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Reather sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is genuinely unique — almost nobody alive carries it.
  • It has the settled sound of a real period name rather than an invention.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being read aloud.
What to consider
  • It is a syllable away from the word rather, and people will hear that first.
  • The name belongs entirely to one American era and one region.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.

Nobody names a baby alone.
